The Buffalo Bills have hired new defensive coordinators John Harbaugh and Darrin James, according to a source.

Harbaugh, the former head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, and James, who spent last season as the linebackers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, will serve as the defensive backs coaches, according the source.

Both were linebackers coaches under Harbaugh in Baltimore.

“John and I are excited to join the Bills organization, where we have such a strong and experienced group of players who are looking to make the jump to the next level,” Harbaugh said in a statement.

“We feel fortunate to be a part of the Buffalo Bills family.

John is a great leader and a great friend of our organization and I know he will do a tremendous job.”

Harbaugh was also hired as the Baltimore Orioles’ defensive coordinator in 2015.

He will be joining Jim Schwartz as defensive backs coordinator.

Harbaugh and Schwartz were teammates in the Baltimore O’s minor league system and have been friends since Harbaugh was a kid.

Schwartz will be the Bills defensive backs’ coordinator for the first time.

In addition to the defensive coordinator positions, Harbaugh and James are also expected to coach the special teams unit.

Harbaugh spent the last two seasons as the Ravens’ defensive backs coaching staff coach, which is also where he spent his first season as an NFL assistant.
